Before the days of television, radio, and electric lights, people had to entertain themselves. Books were very scarce and expensive, so the populace told stories, sang songs, and gossipped about what was happening in the world. If a traveling company of actors or a Punch and Judy puppet show came to town, it was a cause for excitement.

Another kind of entertainment was called the Droll or Droll Teller. He would arrrive in town with a bag of stories, often about the supernatural. He traveled from village to village, an itinerant like the tinkers.

"In Cornwall, a droll-teller can be considered a modern version of a Welsh bard" (http://www.gandolf.com/reference/glossary.shtml).
